The oldest English joke

Humour over the ages often dwells on matters concerning the human body and bodily functions. It is no surprise, therefore, to learn that even the earliest joke uses these same thoughts. Here is the oldest known English joke …

‘Of all the leaves, which leaf is the cleanest?’

‘The holly because no man will wipe his backside on it.’

Too prickly to be used!

Holly - prickly sprig of holly  Prickly holly leaf

As long as you're discussing English jokes, what are the three times that an Englishman laughs at a joke?

1st Time - When he hears it

2nd Time - Later when he recalls it

3rd Time - When he gets it

Larry - you're missing the other times:
4th Time - When he tells it to someone else -
and not forgetting the
5th Time - When someone re-tells it to him and he is so polite that he never says 'I've heard it before.'

... but, of course, you knew that didn't you?
